Visceral Disgorge: Ingesting putridity
28/12/11 || The Duff
A brutal death metal band from Texas got in touch with everyone on staff, naturally I’m the only one with the man-balls to pick up the gauntlet. But American brutal death metal, since the fall of Disgorge, has not offered much – originators Deeds of Flesh are writing some of their more promising material in a while, but they’ve had to take to the recent tech-death upwelling of recent years in order to stay relevant; as far as BDM goes, I can’t say I’ve been excited by any of the US gore-centered bands, and Visceral Disgorge keep my opinion unmoved.
That said, these guys are catchy, and they arrange their tracks well for the album’s purpose, with traditional Suffocation dual-guitar interplay and riffs that gel. There is no doubt that they have riffs, and musically they merge the bluntness of recent Skinless with the tech-rage that seems to be taking the country by storm of late with outfits such as Arkaik, recent Severed Savior and The Faceless, but in small, manageable doses.
The musicians are as you can expect very well rehearsed with their instruments but this being BDM withhold their skills for the most part, being flashy to suit the song although I wouldn’t want to mislead you in their expertise as songwriters – the purpose is to break the listener into pieces, as always, the songs are hardly crafted to form the DM equivalent of entire operas.
The problem I have is that most of “Ingesting Putridity” fails to engage on any level other than how heavy it is, the focus spent on breakdown throwaway in the Skinless vein of “Trample the Weak, Hurdle the Dead”; when the album does get busy, it’s simply to throw a sledge-hammer into the works; none of the ‘faster’ riffs offer anything of great value other than switching up the pace, the core of the songs are the ‘slams’ or slower-paced breakdowns in the Suffocation vein.
Visceral Disgorge are certainly more aware of their complete lack of dynamics than Skinless, so when you need that most primitive style of heavy death metal, this will suit – the production is real thick, buzzsaw-crunchy but new-age without compromising the grueling nature of the music. Given the right soundsystem, this will provide dutifully, but it isn’t music of the ages and its lasting value will tire in little time.
